AMD, This could be classified as a 'bad news' video so let's start with some GOOD news, the camera work and editing were GREAT on this one! Team CCN's adherence to Kaizen principles has elevated production values to a whole new level. When to say good-bye to an old car is a tough decision. I kept some old clunkers too long and learned the hard way by throwing away far too much $$$$ trying to keep them on the road. Folks, let's be kind to AMD's new customer and hope they learned a lesson on the need for PREVENTATIVE maintenance in the future. Now that they have found AMD, we can be confident their next Toyota will be serviced much more often. :D

At least you were professional enough to tell them not to waste their money.

The better the oil and filter, the less often they have to be changed. Project Farm Youtube channel did an excellent series comparing all the top brands.

I agree with extended oil changes as long as the right quality of Synthetic oil is used .

Really? When I started driving we changed spark plugs once a year or every 12,000 miles. Now my Toyota engine has iridium plugs that easily last 120,000 miles. We used to change the coolant every year as well. My Toyota coolant is good for 5 years or 60,000 miles. We put in a winter thermostat in the fall and a summer thermostat in spring. Now the same thermostat can happily stay in your car for a decade. Why would I still follow a 1960s oil change interval when I can use 21st Century oil to compliment all the other 21st century service intervals for my car? 🙂

@gwanderings Congratulations on your sound judgment in choosing an Avalon. You can learn a lot about engine oil by watching a four part series Youtube channel Banks Power just did. Project Farm channel also did a terrific comparison of oil top brands a year or two back. All car brands are not the same and the same is true for motor oil . Happy viewing!

I agree with you as long as we both agree on the definition of 'quality oil'.

Sad but true.

@johdirt7843 Yes, that is why I stick to the posted 100 kmh/ 62 mph speed limit on four lane highways in my jurisdiction. Naturally, I prefer to drive on the two lane highways and back roads with lower limits to further increase my fuel efficiency. Ideally, we should go back to the "55 Saves Lives" approach first adopted during the 'Energy Crisis' of the 1970s. 55 mph or 90 kmh would make driving cheaper and safer at the same time. :D

Rust is evidence of poor maintenance. If you live in the Salt Belt, rustproofing is as necessary for the car's body as oil changes are for the engine.

@wholeNwon I have no idea what you use but I estimate that Mobil 1 is the most over-advertised and over-hyped 'synthetic' oil on the market. I am not a chemical engineer and I do not have access to a private laboratory to conduct my own experiments but I am paying attention. For many years I used the brand of off-the-shelf synthetic oil that was on sale when my car was due for an oil change. I changed the oil 3-4 times per year as I had done with conventional oil. After doing a lot of reading and soul searching on the subject, I experimented with an expensive PAO synthetic rather than the typical Grade III we see in chain stores. At the time I was driving a 1988 Mercury Tracer with the 85 hp Mazda 1.6 engine. The sudden difference in performance, engine noise levels etc were stunning and exactly in keeping with what I had read. Although the engine was in top shape, eventually the car around it fell apart so I replaced it with a new car in 2005 . My 2005 car has the base 1.8 1ZZ-FE Corolla engine. During the 5 year warranty I used PAO synthetic and changed the oil in the relatively brief intervals specified in the manual. I am now in the twelfth year of following the Severe Service intervals specified by the oil maker and I naturally use their top grade oil filter. I live in Canada where the temperature ranges from 35 to -35 Celsius. I follow the 15,000 mile or one year oil change interval and the engine runs as well as the day I bought the car. I have saved a substantial sum of money by doing fewer oil changes, generated a fraction of the waste oil and wasted less time while protecting my engine with the best product. The benefits of top quality PAO based synthetic oil are very well documented for anyone who can actually bother to spend the time doing the reading. I would go so far as to say any other oil is obsolete. I would say the same thing about a spark plug with a shorter life than an iridium plug or engine coolant with a 1 year service life. You boldly used the word PROVE in block capitals. We are on a Youtube channel that specializes in Toyota cars and trucks. Do you think Toyota can PROVE their vehicles are generally the most reliable on the market or is that just a matter of opinion? Is the opinion of the person who believes the Chevy Cruze is as reliable as a Corolla really worth considering? I would respectfully suggest ample proof is out there for people searching for the best car or the best oil to protect their car's engine. 🙂

@wholeNwon Mobil 1 pushed to have the standards lowered on the use of the term 'Synthetic oil' so their second rate product could be sold as one. I suspect I was correct on a few other things as well 🙂

The Toyota oil is a low spec synthetic. Definitely change it at those 5,000 mile/6 month intervals or upgrade to a top spec PAO synthetic and extend the intervals.

Congratulations on getting one of the last manual Camrys. The one in the video looks to have had an oil change every 4 years.

Please don't blame yourself, blame Ford. ;-)

@gianmariavolonte4315 Believe me, I wasted a lot of hard-earned money keeping old junkers on the road before I finally learned my lesson. I may have been too stubborn to listen anyway but I don't remember that many shops telling me to stop wasting my money. Most of them were glad to take it. Eventually I figured it out and bought my first new car. After nearly 17 years my 'Toyota' has been maintained properly and still runs as well as the day I got it.

Ontario probably has hundreds of Krown Rustproofing locations to protect cars from the worst effects of winter.

When my car was made manuals got better mileage than automatics now it is the other way around. Today's CVT Corolla beats the manual by 3-4 mpg on the Highway but the manual should still get 36 or 37 mpg.

@johdirt7843 I am relieved to know there is a second person on this continent who does not speed on the highway.

@wholeNwon You can investigate the quality of oil you are buying the same way you investigate the quality of car you are buying.

@wholeNwon One more thing, Banks Power Youtube channel just did an excellent 4 part series examining synthetic oil. You might enjoy it.

@verlaryder Did I mention Mobil 1? This video provided no detail of the long term service history of this car or the frequency of oil changes over the last 11 years. For anyone who is actually paying ATTENTION to the variety and quality of synthetic oil available, Mobil 1 is widely considered the most over-hyped and over-advertised synthetic oil on the market. Mobil 1 regularly loses in comparisons with much higher grade synthetic oils. I strongly suggest you watch Project Farm Youtube channel's excellent videos comparing a wide range of synthetic oils. Recently another channel called Banks Power did a four part series investigating in detail the top brand of Synthetic oil. All car brands not are equal in quality and neither are all brands of synthetic oil. In short, people using a second or third rate oil must do many more oil changes than those of us who protect our Toyota engines with a quality of oil that matches the supreme quality of our Toyota engine.
1
Most people should follow the Severe Service guidelines especially if they are using an oil of ordinary quality.
1
There are night and day differences between the cheapest synthetic oils and the best. If people insist on using cheap oil and filters in their expensive engines they need to do more oil changes to protect their investment. I use an 'expensive' oil and expensive filter with a 15,000 mile/1 Year Severe Service interval to lubricate my Corolla engine. Once the 5 year factory warranty expired I switched to following the oil company's service schedule. I am in my 12th year of once-a-year oil changes and the engine is as good as new. Expensive oil has thoroughly protected my engine, saved me a small fortune and cut my waste oil production.
1
Congratulations! Make sure you keep the receipts for the oil and filters in case there is ever an issue with your Toyota warranty.

@volvo09 I live in Canada where, I believe, we invented rust. Thankfully, we also invented Rustproofing. I have used Krown on my 2005 since it was new and it is rust free to this day.

There is a second good way to murder a perfectly good Toyota . If you live in the Salt Belt, you can meet or exceed the preventative maintenance schedule for the mechanical components while ignoring rustproofing. That is an excellent formula to end up with a perfectly running engine and transmission encased in a rotten body. Rust = Neglect.

I hope you write to Toyota. USA to report the dealer's bad behavior. For the record, the 2011 Camry in this video has the 2AR-FE 2.5 engine .

There are many sources to research the variety of motor oils on the market. The better the oil and filter you use, the less frequently you have to change it.
