Zionism was a secular political movement, and were looking in Africa, either Uganda or Madagascar to colonize neither of which would satisfy the British. They wanted a bulwark to protect the Suez Canal for French and British colonial interests. This bore out in the Suez Crisis of 1956 where French, British, and Israeli forces took the Suez Canal.
