The road rash on the front edge of the hood can be a good sign of mostly highway miles (or of tailgating on dirt roads which is not so good). Is it a good idea to just replace the gas cap, radiator cap and oil filler cap periodically as a preventative maintenance thing?

I change our oil every 5,000 miles on our 2009 RAV4. We drive about 90% highway miles. It still looks clean at 5k and is still at the full mark on the dip-stick. Just out of curiosity, I plan to do an oil analysis within a month at our next oil change. No one changes my oil but me. I've been doing it since I was 18 and I'm 75 now.

@mylesgray3470 Good to know. Ours is a 2009 RAV4, Japan made with the 2.5 liter engine. It has just over 68,000 miles on it but it's still like 13 years old. No oil leaks and no oil consumption. We change it every 5,000 miles and it still reads full on the dip-stick. However, we recently had the intermediate shaft replaced on the steering and the transmission was replaced with a Toyota remanufactured unit. Those two items were covered by an aftermarket warranty which is now expired. Both were done by the Toyota dealer we purchased it from.

You would take "any of the older ones"? Even those with the problematic 2.4 engines?

@igglybiggly6951 I'm not sure that the ones made in Japan had the same problem as those assembled in the USA. Maybe, I'm not sure. Also, it may have been only the ones from 2006-2010... Again, I'm not sure. All I know is that our 2009 RAV4 has the 2.5 liter engine.

@igglybiggly6951 I wish I knew of an independent repair shop like yours in my area just in case I might need one some day. You aren't in Pennsylvania by any chance are you?

Who told you that you needed brake pads? Two years before I replaced my front pads they told me I needed to replace them. Unless you looked at them yourself, is be careful. You may not need rotors. As long as they aren't warped and they pass the minimum required thickness. I replaced the front pads on our 2009 RAV4 at just under 57,000 miles. My rotors were fine. This was the first time the front pads were replaced. The rear pads are also original and haven't been replaced yet. We now have 68,000 miles on the vehicle. It passed inspection last month. Currently since I retired, we drive 85 to 90% highway miles.

It's too bad that we have to inspect everything when we get our car back from the dealer.

If the car calls for 5W-30, I'll use any brand that meets Toyota's specs but I'll buy 0W-30.

I think you mean Mobil1.

We previously had a 1996 Honda Accord and when it came time to replace the water pump it was impossible to find a new one that was not made in China, including one from a Honda dealer.

I will buy Denso spark plugs and oxygen sensors but only if they aren't made in China. O² sensors on Amazon claim to be Denso parts but admit that they come from China. I bought Denso from an auto parts store and paid over four times as much but they're not made in China.

I would change it. 80,000 miles isn't that high. If you're concerned the just do a single drain and fill.
