  1. Okay, our 2009 RAV4 has the same engine and I change my own oil using a recommended full synthetic 0W-20 oil every 5,000 miles. I'm hoping ours doesn't have any problems this serious. Just replacing the VVTi actuator will be bad enough when the time comes. Right now ours has less than 84,000 miles on it and hardly any rust. It has no oil consumption issues at all. The dipstick doesn't even seem to drop noticably between changes and even though the oil in it at the moment has 4,660 miles on it, it looks very clean, pretty much the color of honey or maple syrup. ONE THING I WOULD LIKE TO SEE is an oil analysis on the oil in the engine whenever one of these engine overhauls are done. At least then it might show us that the oil analysis may not always show a problem even though there is a problem. Then again it might . Anyway, doing that would really be living up to the full disclosure mantra.
