No other film has taken my 39-yo arse back to those terrible moments lying in bed at 5 after I'd just woken up from a nightmare. At that age the line between what was real and what was imaginary was transparent, at best. I knew the things that had just tormented my subconscious had slipped through the veil and were now out there, waiting just beyond the umbrae of shadow cast off the moonlight in my bedroom. I was unable to move or call out, because I was certain that if I did, whatever that shapeless, dark thing was would leap out and get me. And so it was, locked in a silent battle of will, seeing which of us would make it to sunrise.

@stickshiftstarship I don't think it's about abuse. I think too many people look for shallow meanings in works like this, without thinking that it's likely not that black and white. You just see parents, scary things, and the girl saying "I don't want to talk about mom", and jump to the most obvious, surface level solution you can think of. I don't think it's about parental abuse. I believe film is about what the world looks like at night to a child having a nightmare. Familiar things look foreign in the dark, and to a child's mind, imagination and reality overlap a great deal. This movie takes us adults right back to that uncanny, indescribable fear we felt as children, staring into the umbrae of the shadows cast upon the objects in our room and seeing monsters within the nebulous shapes within. That's why the ending shows a repetitive scary thing (I had a lot of recurring nightmares as a kid, I bet you did, too) then a door playing heavenly music (your parent coming in to check on you if you were crying), then a face on the dark telling you to go back to sleep. It seems pretty obvious, at least to me, that the film represents a child's nightmare.

@volodymyrzitro8489 I can tell ya, it ain't fun. When you're 4 you can't really distinguish your imagination from reality, so a nightmare feels like real life, especially in that hazy moment when you first wake up and you don't really know where you are. I think this film is about that hazy moment, you're not sure whether you're awake or still in the nightmare, then suddenly the door opens, you feel like you're saved, only for mom (or something else, you can't sense in the dark) to tell you to go back to sleep.

33:00 AAAAAAAAAA this happened to me too! I was at a rest stop at night with my parents, my sister and I had lay down on a green belt with a tree on it. We were there for about 15 minutes, and when I started sitting up to get back in the car, I discovered an orb weaver had built its web RIGHT ON TOP OF US. I shot up, only to find the spider was right in my face. 😨

I think it's an exploration of a young child's psyche after experiencing a nightmare. At that age you don't know what's real and what isn't. When you're lying there in bed, frozen in fear from the horrors your wild imagination have just put you through, your imagination takes over and the terrible things you're convinced lie beyond the shadows are there, lurking, you're sure they just spoke to you from the darkness but you can't tell if it was real or not, but you lie there petrified until morning comes, which feels lifetimes away.
