As a former vet and barn fowl expert, I need to add some context to this. The thing is, an emu with a severe leg injury has no quality of life. Emus run, dance, and jump, it's just what they do. It's not humane to attempt a wheelchair or anything like that, because they're too big, too heavy, and it's robbing them of their biggest joy in life.
I've rehabbed plenty of birds, slipped tendons are very, very tricky to heal, especially in a heavy biped like this. This bird got very lucky, it doesn't always work and more often than not, without surgical intervention (which is extremely risky for birds, they don't handle anesthesia well), the tendon eventually slips out of place again. So yes, for an emu with a poor prognosis, most vets will gently advocate pink juice, because most people won't bear the cost or time investment needed for something that at best only has a 50/50 chance at working.
We also are watching a highly edited clip. Trust me, as someone who's been featured on several of these channels (I think including this one? I lost track), they edit out A LOT. They take an hour of interviews and edit it down to a few minutes, it's very possible a vet gave her instructions on how to splint, but said not to get her hopes up. Because that's realistic.
Sorry for the essay, thanks for reading! And lemme know if you have seen my ducks on here 😂
