Not only that, but those explorers ended up spreading syphilis that utterly destroyed the population. They lost >90% of the people on the island. And because of the genetic bottleneck, their numbers have never recovered.

There is evidence that is exactly what happened. The Sentinelese buried Chau, and a year later India did a population survey like they always do every few years by circumnavigating the island and doing a headcount. They found far fewer people there than in previous surveys, and didn't see one single elderly person anywhere on the island. It's hypothesized that making contact with Chau's body was enough to transmit pathogens.

They're already dwindling. The Indian government does a head count every few years, the last one they did was in 2018 and they didn't see many people, only about 30 adults and a handful of young kids. They didn't see any elderly people at all, not one person who looked over the age of 30. Because previous attempts at contact decimated the Sentinelese with diseases and wiped out the majority of its people, it's no wonder why the survivors try to fight off anybody trying to come to the island. I don't blame them one bit. But the damage is done, with their genetic bottleneck their numbers will likely never recover. We may lose the tribe completely within our lifetime. It's extremely sad.

I see you are also a person of taste.

What he did was abhorrent. The Sentinelese were once a population of 4500, but because of diseases introduced to them from outsiders decimated the natives, and reduced them to only a couple hundred survivors. Their population has never recovered. THAT'S why they react this way to anybody trying to get to the island. Can't say I blame them. This is not new information, these risks are plastered all over the Andaman islands. Anyone who tries to set foot on North Sentinel Island, does so with the explicit knowledge that going there is likely going to wipe out the people there.

@kri1ndawn440 The outbreak wasn't minor, it was catastrophic. They went from 4500 people to less than 200.
