  1. Her abusive parents tried to beat their child into becoming their perfect child...and in doing so, they created a murderer. I don't condone her actions, but on some level, I understand them. They kept her locked up in their home, even though she was an adult. They wanted her to be a robot, disallowing her to make any human connections or experience the simple joys of youth, like falling in love, having fun, or even making friends. They punished her severely for getting Bs in school. Is it any wonder she turned out the way she did?

  2. I have a hard time feeling sympathetic. Vietnamese fathers are extremely conservative and abusive, especially towards their daughters. He was no different.

  3. Exactly. What these parents did to their daughter was nothing short of abusive. Obviously they didn't deserve this, but I kind of understand why Jen felt she had no other choice.

  6. I agree. Her parents were NOT good people. Especially her father. I don't feel sorry for the brother though, as their only son he was the golden child, he very likely followed in his father's footsteps. He will continue the cycle of abuse on his own children one day.

  7. "Maybe they didn't go about it perfectly"? That's an understatement. They were flat out abusive. They didn't want a good life for her at all, they wanted HER to give THEM a good life. That's all that mattered to them, they didn't care one bit for her own wellbeing.
