  2. That's how science works, though. I know it's stating the obvious, but until it is, the scientific method forces us to assume we don't know for sure. Look at the famous pitch drop experiment, the longest ongoing experiment in history. We know the pitch was dripping (about one drop per decade), but no one witnessed the critical drip actually occur in real time until 2014. So until then, even though we knew it had to be dripping because of the obvious presence of previous drops in the beaker, it was technically unknown until witnessed and therefore proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.

  3. On another tofu dregs collapse, I heard an awful story where this dude came to visit his elderly grandmother whose apartment was being renovated. The Chinese construction crew ignored every safety measure, they were about to install a vent by simply going right through a load bearing wall. The guy gave them an earful and told them it was illegal, but he had to leave for his own home eventually. Sure enough, the moment he left they went right ahead and put the vent through the load bearing wall. The guy got his grandma out of there asap. They just don't care over there. They do not care. If they can get away with using shoddy materials/labor and pocketing the difference, they will.

  5. Nuclear power plants are still by far the safest, cleanest, most efficient energy we have right now, but man it's terrifying how often people will cut corners while building and operating them.

  7. I've seen it. One such arm looks like it's been frozen in mid-stroke, as if they were swimming through the mud. It's haunting. Still, I feel the worst death was definitely Omayra's. Imagine being stuck in that puddle, knowing you're going to die, surrounded by people who can't do anything to save you.

  9. ​ @HFFCANADA  It's pretty terrifying. The concrete used in these buildings is so cheap, it literally crumbles like tofu. There are many instances of it dissolving when it rains. But the government won't allow anyone to talk about it, because it's an embarrassment on the nation. So you have all these people suffering, that no one knows about. This is what happens when you have a government who gets rid of regulation and looks the other way with the few regulations they DO have.

  13. This is exactly why the Seattle viaduct was taken down. It's terrifying that this could have easily happened there, too. Same with the unsafe "temporary" 520 bridge. Local government going "eh, good enough" and leaving temporary fixes as the permanent solution is aggravatingly common.

It's appalling how middle managers and other execs care more about making their numbers look good, than the integrity of their employees or even the health and safety of the public. I guarantee if you'd said nothing or your reporting manager buried it and it failed as you warned it would, you'd be the one thrown under the bus.

  34. My partner's mother is like this. She's very melodramatic and when she's a passenger in mine or her son's car, she will place her feet on the dashboard to "brace" herself as a passive aggressive way of saying she's convinced you're going to cause a crash, no matter how slowly or carefully you're driving. We've told her that doing this will cause her entire lower body to turn into giblets if there WAS an accident, but of course, she won't listen. I admit, part of me wishes there WOULD be an accident while she's doing that just to teach her a lesson. I know that's messed up, but my god she can be insufferable sometimes.

  47. Nah dude, the Saturday Morning Cartoon block was a weekly ritual that many of us millennials dearly miss. You'd park yourself in front of the TV with your favourite sugary cereal, and get transported to zany worlds for a good 2-3 hours. Ah, good times...

  48. My former boss was an engineer at NASA at the time this happened. He was furious about this, he and his team had told the higher ups that it was unsafe to launch in sub freezing temps because of the O rings, and that they had to delay launch. But they'd already delayed once, and they were scared another delay would mean the loss of public interest. They cared more about the ratings and publicity than they did the lives of everyone on board. I bet they'd have been less careless had it been THEIR loved ones on board, but they weren't, so they were happy to gamble with human life for a bit of good press. My boss left the organization in disgust, only to see NASA hadn't learned anything from this when space shuttle Columbia was lost. As for me, I was just a little girl, watching the live broadcast with my mom. I was just 3, so the only thing I remember is how scared I was by the eerie way the smoke seemed to lurch and twist in the sky. It still makes me deeply unsettled today.
