That's how science works, though. I know it's stating the obvious, but until it is, the scientific method forces us to assume we don't know for sure. Look at the famous pitch drop experiment, the longest ongoing experiment in history. We know the pitch was dripping (about one drop per decade), but no one witnessed the critical drip actually occur in real time until 2014. So until then, even though we knew it had to be dripping because of the obvious presence of previous drops in the beaker, it was technically unknown until witnessed and therefore proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Personally, I think the prolonged electric shock that went on for three hours is way worse than the ra† thing. Not to mention that they did it to a child.
