  1. This reminds me of something I saw at the Seattle aquarium..they have a sea lion all alone in a tiny tank. All he does is swim in tight circles, all day. Every day. He's totally stir-crazy. This story makes me nine kinds of upset. ._.

  3. Sweederland Johnson All I can say to your E.T. crap is the same thing Neil DeGrasse Tyson says. Chimps are only 2% removed from our DNA, yet that paltry number gave us Einstein, Mozart and Da Vinci. For all we know, the aliens we meet could be 2% removed from us in the same way. I get that. So far, so good. But, I'm sorry, although I fully support humane slaughter and the abolishment of factory farming, to compare a chicken to an orca whale, a creature that we know is one of the smartest creatures on Earth and feels emotions more deeply than even we do, is ignorance incarnate. It's the emotion that factors in more than intelligence. I raised chickens my entire adolescence. If they feel emotion, I've never seen it. Ducks, yes. Pigs, yes. Cows, yes. But not chickens. They're also dumb as a post. They do feel pain, and so I am in agreement that we should not make them suffer. But if I had the choice to rescue a chicken vs an orca whale that was being tormented, and could only help one, I'd go with the whale.

There's a fascinating story about how a pod of orcas interrupted a shark diving tour, killed the shark and spent the next 1/2 hour holding it up for the people in the boat to see, almost as if they were gloating or happy to prove the huge favor they did for them. Orcas don't attack humans in the wild. It's as if they understand we're intelligent, understand we're like them. Maybe they even recognize that we're smarter than they are and look up to us for it. Freaky, yet amazing stuff.

  5. JE Hoyes I agree to an extent, but I also disagree. I see nothing wrong with modern zoos, since many of them work to conserve and protect endangered species like tigers and rhinos. But the crappy concrete and steel sideshows that exist all over the world are fucking evil. Same with aquariums. I have several fish, and they love the good life. But when I see a betta in a tiny cup or a goldfish in a small bowl it drives me bonkers!

  6. JE Hoyes 1. Because taking care of animals requires money. 2. So that people can come and enjoy the animals and want to do more to conserve them, too. 3. "Cramped and soulless"? Have you BEEN to a high-quality zoo? They're practically resort parks! Seattle, San Diego, Los Angeles, the ones I've been to were very nice and the employees work hard to enrich the lives of the animals.  I specifically said that the bad ones need to be shut down, and hard. I feel powerless sometimes, though. Like...any zoo in China and India are gonna be horrible. But they barely care about the welfare of their own people, so naturally there are zero animal rights laws on the books. I can donate to causes, but ultimately I don't exactly have the power to change laws or mindsets over there, you know?

  8. leerman22 Pigs weird me out...the ones I raised were bright, alert and super smart as babies, but when they hit adulthood it's like a switch went off in their brains and they all became mindless eating machines. They didn't care about anything else. Like a dumb gene got triggered or something.
