  1. Well, duh. Religion is, in and of itself, an exclusionary institution. It breeds disdain and judgmentalism. Atheists are always genuine in their kindness, whereas the pious usually are only doing it out of some self-inflated ego or veneer of righteousness.

  2. Laurence Wylie That's correct. You see, when an atheist does something nice for someone, it's out of the goodness of their heart. If a religious person did it, more often than not it's because they feel obligated to because they're afraid of going to hell.

  4. Laurence Wylie Where did I say those were the only two motivators? I said that's the common reason for atheists vs religious types, nothing more. Also just as a side note, intelligent people do not immediately resort to petty name-calling and vitriol when presented with an opinion they do not like. Food for thought.  Oh, and also, if the reason you're throwing your little hissy fit is because you're a religious person who feels slighted by my comment, then congratulations, you've just validated my original argument,

  5. joe cunningham Well, what is it you're trying to say? We're pretty fucked up, and far from the first in just about anything positive. I don't care about how worse off we could be, every last American should strive to fix the bad before  basking in the good.

  6. dutchvonrichardson I don't think I could ever survive there. I remember reading a story about a New Hampshire family relocating to Missouri for the husband's job, and they found their kids were forced to pray in public school. They reported it to the board of education, and they put the kibosh on it. Inevitably, the entire town turned on them and made their lives a living hell until they just opted to move back and try to start their lives over. That these religious nutjobs consider themselves as morally superior is enough to make my head explode!

  9. dutchvonrichardson I agree...and sadly, after that it just becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, because if you come straight out the gate antagonizing whatever social group you had that bad experience with, naturally they're going to react badly and further cement your prejudice. It's so aggravating to deal with those people, but sadly they're everywhere...hell, even in this comment thread.
