It's awful that he tried to act like nothing happened and moved in to hug you. I'm angry on your behalf. My mom is the same way, she still thinks she did nothing wrong.

THIS. We have given so much of ourselves, but all they do is take, and take, and take. Never once has my mother done anything to mend the relationship. Not once has she ever even admitted that she did me wrong raising me.

@sai6118 Ugh, mine too. My mother will look me right in the eye and say "that never happened". THERE WERE WITNESSES! She still to this day thinks my sister and I are the bad guys for cutting contact. My sister is full NC and I am VLC. When I visit, I stay at a hotel, no matter how much she complains about it being "a waste of money". My peace of mind is worth any cost.

@PatronOfTea You know it wasn't. He thinks he's the victim.

Same with my dad. I don't feel anything, not even relief like I always thought I'd feel. It was just another day, like someone telling me about the weather.

I'm in a similar situation, both my partner and I are old millennialls that had an abusive upbringing. I'm low contact with my mom, but he isn't. It's hard seeing our respective mothers treat each other better than ourselves, their own children. It's always been this way. But we both know what lies beneath that kind veneer. I wonder if my mom will turn on him when we get married, like she did on my sister's husband, who is now NC with her.

@msbullmusic Some mistakes you can't walk back from. You're not this man. You can't forgive someone on another person's behalf.

@rdrvryt You don't know that at all. If she truly learned, she wouldn't be commenting for attention on the internet. That poor man is still just an accessory to her.

@The_Slammy_Jammy This. They love to slam millennials for participation trophies, then turn around and demand one for literally doing the bare minimum.

I'm getting angry seeing younger zoomers and older alphas giving us flak for going NC with our parents. Just because you had a happy home life doesn't magically take away your ability to empathize with those of us who didn't. The whole "but faaaaaamily" BS is such a toxic mindset. I didn't ask to be born, I didn't choose my parents. I don't owe them anything. "Oh but they raised you, you owe them your life!" No I don't. Raising me is literally the bare minimum, parents are supposed to raise their kids.

You're lucky he didn't dump you. Frankly, he should have.

36:00 Mothers like her (and mine) don't have grace, respect, and empathy for their kids, because they can't let go of the idea that their kids are their property, no matter how old their children are. I'm 41 and my mother still treats me like a child who can't make her own adult decisions.
