  1. Which is why Yui/Rei took Gendo's hand off, for what he did to her son. He was so obsessed with bringing her back (and creepily loving on a literal child made from her DNA) that he shunned his son, who reminded him of her. You'd think he'd be closer to Shinji as he clearly resembles Yui, but logic is not his strong suit, no matter how much he pretends to put logic over emotions.

The main characters of Uzumaki did nothing wrong, their unspeakable suffering is through no fault of their own. I know that's part and parcel when it comes to cosmic horror, but it still makes me really sad to think about.

It wasn't Nolan's fault that he was raised with this mindset, but it doesn't make him any less evil. Likewise, I agree with your statement that Viltrumite culture should be done away with because of their harmful cultural practices. The same should be applied in real life, as well. FGM, merking women for the sake of "honor", caste systems where human beings are regarded as having no value for pointless and arbitrary reasons, even things like grape and child abuse are defended as "cultural" by said cultures where it is normalized. I firmly believe that any culture that proudly inflicts such great harm onto defenseless innocents, has no place in polite society.

  7. Agreed. I see it as a mirror into human nature, much like Hellstar Remina was. In the face of calamity, the overwhelming majority of people reveal their true, monstrous selves. Only rarely is someone shown to be truly good when their character is put to the test.

Spending hours upon hours trying to perfect my makeup until I break down and end up not going out because I'm so embarrassed about my appearance. I've had guy "friends" tell me to my face that I've "hit the wall" and am constantly told that my value is in my appearance, and no one likes my appearance now that I'm older.

  12. Jason DeMarco released a statement that has since been deleted, saying it's all the fault of just one person. He wouldn't give a name, but this one guy completely screwed them over and is the sole reason for Uzumaki's failure. Given my experience as a former associate producer, I'd bet dollars to donuts that it was either Zaslav/Warner Bros, or the Japanese director. I'm not exaggerating when I say that my time spent working with big name AAA publishers and collaborative US-Japanese projects was the worst of my career, if not my entire life. Japan has the most toxic work culture on earth. I truly cannot understate just how awful employees are treated there. It's very top down, one guy controls all aspects of the project. You're not allowed to say no to him, you're not allowed to give him constructive feedback that would drastically improve workflow, you're not even allowed to quit. If you do, there's a good chance your ex boss will try to ruin your life, both personally and professionally. I guess only time will tell if any whistleblowers decide to come forward. I hope they do. People need to be made aware of the abysmal working conditions they were forced to endure.

Men will be physically imposing, and sometimes even spill over into violence. Women tend to raise their voices and break you down with their words, attacking any aspect of you they know will cut deep. Both can be equally devastating.

  20. I agree on all counts. Men like Tony don't have happy endings, and the unhappiest of all is if he'd lived a full life. The only real tragedy is that his innocent family had to suffer one final trauma by having to witness his death.

Spirals are a common motif for very obvious reasons: They're simple shapes that are easy to recreate, they draw the eye in, they're visually interesting to look at, and they're absolutely everywhere in nature. It's also a prominent symbol in Buddhism, hence why you see it so much in Japanese media.
