@codejunkes4607 Japan likely surrendered because the Soviet Union declared war on Japan, not because of the atomic bomb attacks, so I don't see where you get the 100%. A lot of other things no doubt happened at that time - maybe Japanese forces lost a town in China - but it doesn't mean that any country that wants to win a war just needs to capture that town in China. The devastation created by the atomic bomb attacks wasn't particularly worse than the devastation caused by the fire bombing of Tokyo and that fire bombing of Tokyo didn't cause Japan to surrender.

@boxingsense3459 If Putin had intended a conflict lasting more than a few days he would have sent his forces into Ukraine with more than a few days worth of food and fuel. He thought it was going to be like the Russian invasion into Crimea in 2014. Obviously he was very, very wrong. And Putin did keep saying special military operation and Russians got in serious trouble for saying that there was a war in Ukraine. Special military operation clearly means something very short and straightforward. It doesn't mean a four year WW1 type slugfest in which Russia sufferers many hundreds of thousands of casualties and loses all of the military equipment it took 80 years to accumulate (as it eventually will). It also doesn't mean needing to conscript vast numbers of new men into the army. It also doesn't mean stripping the country of so many workers that Russia can't keep electricity and heating on in its cities in the winter. It also doesn't mean gradually having all oil refineries in western Russia put out of operation by Ukrainian attacks. It also doesn't mean having over a million of the country's most talented people flee the country.

Actually there were not constant nuclear threats in the cold war. There was always the danger that an accident or miscalculation or misunderstanding might lead to a nuclear war but I don't remember hearing a Soviet leader ever threaten to start a nuclear war as Putin and members of his government and Russian trolls regularly do today. Soviet leaders seemed to understand as well as western leaders that it was insane to start a nuclear war. I don't know if Putin understands that. Also, Putin seems much more paranoid than were Soviet leaders. He seems to have a constant fear that a western country is going to invade Russia - a completely ludicrous fear but then Putin is a very weak man with huge feelings of inferiority and insecurity. Soviet leaders weren't like that, especially given that at the time the Soviet Union had a far larger population than the United States whereas today the United States has about 200 million more people than has Russia and that gap keeps increasing quickly. I think that the main concern in the cold war was that if the Soviet Union invaded western Europe NATO troops couldn't stop them and NATO would need to resort to using nuclear weapons to stop Soviet forces. Though there was that incident in the 1980s when a Soviet officer saved the world by refusing to launch any nuclear weapons even though his systems were telling him that the Soviet Union was under full scale attack by nuclear missiles and that some had even hit places in the Soviet Union.

Do any Russian people still believe the nonsense Putin propaganda that Russian forces are liberating the Ukrainian people from Nazi dictators and that the Ukrainian people greet their "Russian liberators" with hugs, kisses and flowers? I know that no Russian soldiers in Ukraine believe that. I'm sure that any Russian soldiers who believed that lost that delusion within two days of entering Ukraine.

Russia uses a nuclear weapon in Ukraine and within one hour Poland, Sweden, Finland and Moldova announce thst they will be installing 500 nuclear missiles aimed at Russian cities and at Russian military bases and NATO announces it will be destroying Russian invasion forces in Ukraine and any Russian launch site or plane inside Russia that fires at Ukraine and China announces economic sanctions on Russia and reminds Russia that it wants back all the Chinese territory that it says Russia stole in the 1800s. Not saying all that would happen but if it did Russian people would be thinking, "What the heck has Putin done to us now?".

@boxingsense3459 None of Ukraine is under NATO control Russian troll. It's quite amusing to hear Russian trolls talk about how Russian forces are fighting off an attack by NATO forces when NATO is not even in the war. If NATO was in the war then terrorist imperialist Russian invasion forces in Ukraine would have been destroyed by this time two years ago.
