@Martial-Mat Christians don't look to an external entity for a sense of morality either. Morality is in-built or hardwired into every human soul (including the atheist), we simply recognise the author of that conscience. This grounds morality in an authority and makes every excuse to side-step the conscience null and void. And it's not just the fear of eternal punishment that prevents us from doing evil. For example: Stealing is wrong, but you could argue that stealing something that nobody is going to miss would be ok, but the very act of stealing itself harms you within, without there being a direct victim. Christians ethics keeps people on the straight and narrow, no excuses.
The 'threat' of eternal punishment is not a threat, it's simply a statement of fact. Do X and Y will follow. Hell is simply an eternal seperation from God, i.e: non-existence (Jesus called it 'outer darkness'). God doesn't send anyone to hell, you send yourself to hell by your pride.
And we all need salvation, there is no man alive who is not subject to the irrational desires of the body. You sometimes do things you didn't wish to do, and sometimes didn't do things you ought to have done. We're all failures, we all fall short of what is expected of us. These are our sins, these are things which bar us from knowing a greater reality.
