  3. Actually, we use faith regarding belief in God and the afterlife and we use reason for our knowledge of the natural world. As science is simply the study of the natural world, Christians can believe in both God and science, without contradiction. This is why belief in God is called faith and not fact, it's dependant upon the faith of the individual believer. Catholics have always believed this, with Dante famously using Virgil as a personifaction of human reason to guide him through a knowledge of himself and the world around him (symbolised as Hell and Purgatory), and then as he reach Paradise (the supernatural), Virgil could go no further, and his place was taken over by Beatrice, the personifaction of divine faith or grace.
