I believe the reason the celtic form was different was because British Christianity became distant from Rome after the legions left Britain in the 5th century, leaving Britian isolated and invaded by varying tribes. The celtic monks then converted the northern pagan Anglo-saxons while the Papacy converted the southern Anglo-saxons, hence the clash. And i believe the triangular tonsure was a symbol of the trinity.
