And oh course people have done bad things in the name of religion, but people have also done bad things in the name of secular "progress", such as political ideology, patriotism, imperialism, and cult movements. To suggest that good people without religion won't become victims of groupthink or led astray with collectivism is simple thinking, if anything, removing religion that offers a strong objective morality, leaves people wide open to suggestion and influence.
