You might be interested in a book called: "The autobiography of a hunted Priest" by John Gerrad. Father Gerrad was a Jesuit missionary working undercover in England during the time of Elizabeth 1st, when being a priest was punished by death. He hid in 'priestholes', knew some of the gunpowder plotters and even escaped from the tower of London. His account of the escape is amazing.

You're the type of liberal who defends the middle east's huamn rights abuses by calling it a 'beautiful ancient culture'.

@CanVultus If you wish to understand the gunpowder plot from the plotters perspective, then it's essential.

@AndersenTrades Father Gerrad was not corrupt. Everybody loved him, even those who arrested and tried him.

@patrick383ironworker He sounded like a great man, much respect to martyr John Southworth. I think you would really enjoy the book.

@bullterror5 How can you say this when you haven't read it? Father Gerrard heard of 'a plot' during confession, but he was NOT directly involved and even tried to discourage the plotter (I believe it was Catesby). "Weird how the Gunpowder Plot continues to be glorified" It isn't glorified. This is why you need to read the book, and Gerrard's other work: "The condition of Catholics under James 1st". And it's certainly not glorified by English Catholics (myself included) because the Plot signalled the bitter end of any Catholic resurgence in England. The Plot made it absolute that Catholicism was synymous with treason (this view lasted well into the 19th century). So even though persecution of Catholics was harsh back then, Gerrard never supported overthrowing the Monarch.
