If you reward him, he knows he can get more and so after a pause to rebuild his troops he will do the same again. The geopolitical history of the countries around Russia are proof of this. Finally, someone in the comments who knows the situation. Russia has not "wanted to negotiate from day 1". It is invading a sovereign country that was not a threat to Russia. Ukraine is a threat to the Putin regime because it has been becoming a successful democracy on Russia's doorstep. This couldn't be tolerated by Putin. If Russia wanted an end to this war all it needs to do is to withdraw from Ukraine. If Ukraine wants and end it has to fight for it. If you agree to talks with Russia at this stage, the fighting will stop whilst they learn their lessons and rebuild up troops and armaments and have another go at the end of the decade - and this time the Baltics and the Suwałki Gap will be on the table as well. If you think that appeasing Russia will reduce the nuclear threat you do not understand the regime there.
