I'm a left leaning liberal who passionately supports Ukraine. Cox-Richardson has given me a respect for the "old right", as have you prof. Trump is an entirely different beast. And if he got into power, he'd just use the office to go after his political enemies and weaken, perhaps destroy, democratic institutions.

  57. I've been learning Rust on and off for a couple of years and I really think it's ground breaking and I'm a Rustacian for sure. When it comes to using it outside systems programming (for which it is rapidly becoming the obvious choice) I do think it will struggle to gain purchase though. Developer speed is slower. There are almost certainly time savings to be had later in the software life-cycle due to the safety methods baked into the language (you're not going to get so many midnight calls that the production server is down as you would with other languages) but the problem is that companies don't look at these cost savings so much, they just look at developer speed. Go will wipe the floor in many of these other non-system dev scenarios I think. Anyway, anything but JS is good in my book (long live Ruby xD).

  61. My father worked for the UK Ministry of Defence for 35 years. His "take" is that he is glad that it is not being rushed. It is a very complex thing to do and once it is started there is no retry. Also, the structure of it will be different depending upon the weapons available, it is worth waiting a little bit for further weaponry if necessary. I'm glad that my country are providing some more advanced weapons, I just wish that NATO not prevaricating and was standing on Ukraine now, and pushing Russia back behind its borders and keeping it there.   66. I have the utmost respect for what you're doing for Ukraine professor. It's remarkable. As a left-leaning voter in the UK, I would like to make one political point. And that is that Reagan pushed for supply-side and trickle down economics, as did Thatcher here pretty much the same time. And the poorest were left high-and dry, whilst the richest got even richer. That was the staging for the loss of faith in democratic institutions in both our countries, ultimately I think it can be strongly argued that this - along with the 2008 financial crisis - led to Brexit over here, and Trump over there. Biden has worked hard to bring back a level of demand-side economics, however it's clear that his message that he is doing that is lost entirely in the turbulence of the US state of democracy. I think this is a terrible shame. Best regards to you.

They were on the same side, but don't think for a second that this wasn't the US drawing a couple of lines in the sand against the Soviets. Europe could well now be all Soviet or ex-Soviet states now if they hadn't. European forces weren't a match for the Soviets, and nor were the Brits. As a Brit, I'm glad you helped.   182. I was involved in the Heterogeneous Telescopes Network project a few years ago. The idea was to link up - in a network - the astronomical telescopes of various institutions around the world. All kinds of advantages to the facilities doing this including stopping facilities from duplicating science (e.g. stopping more than one telescope looking at a target object at the same time); also being able to get 24 hour coverage of objects (if the sun rises where you are, you hand off the observation to another facility which is coming into nighttime). Technically, everything was feasible - complex but feasible. All the scientists and engineers were fired up and into the project. However, politically, it was an absolute no go, and that's what ultimately stopped the project. Eventually, from the ashes, a company was formed which built or bought its own telescopes and the problem was solved internally to their network (Las Cumbres Observatory).

  185. I think these are two technologies that could go somewhere. Rust solves a lot of memory handling issues using a static compile time borrow-checker - these problems that come back and bite C++ programmers years after deployment. Also it's as fast as C++ at runtime, and a little faster at write-time. And WASM may turn out to be platform independent - that could be a big deal. Also, I think there's another very important point. Moore's Law no longer applies. CPUs are not getting faster like they were say 10 years ago. Talk to any hardware developer and they'll tell you that the next major speed increase will have to come from software. Low level and fast languages may well yet make a big comeback.

I am hoping that one of them gets a good Google ranking in search at some point and starts pulling people to this channel - because you certainly deserve it. I would be wary of doing another channel also because your frequency of video publishing potentially halves, or at least reduces, and that is certainly a metric that YouTube uses to rank a channel. Final thought, I think it's good to keep your videos short and to the point like this one. Less work for you guys, and you can make a second video which is a part 2 - thereby keeping up with the YT metric but not making you burn out in from the work load. Take it easy. :-)

Added to this, Russia doesn't throw the sons of their richest citizens at the Ukrainians, they keep them in Russia or "safely occupied regions". One of the effects of the Ukrainian incursion was to go directly for the conscripts in their "safe" positions. It's a political move as much as it is anything else.

As a software developer, my experience is that companies are suddenly resistant when engineers push for DevOps to be mutated into DevSecOps - it's so often seen as extra cost and a drag on deployment. Okay, for some use cases it's overkill - but actually very few. Most systems store private user data somewhere in some form. The thing that I am regularly shocked by is that there's still way too much low-hanging fruit for hackers in a lot of internet facing systems and APIs. Vulns that could have been patched out are left open just because sec is seen as a waste. It's a big threat to UK companies.

So many actual Russian experts - I'll name three: Vlad Vexler, Peter Pomerantsev, Greg Yudin (and many more: just about every guest that appears on YouTube's Silicon Curtain) - disagree that you stop Putin by bending to Putin. And the West's goal currently is not regime change in Russia. We'd have seen F16s in Ukraine and NATO on the ground there if that were the case. These dangerous misrepresentations of western intent and the state of the conflict in Ukraine just give Putin what he wants. Putin wants to freeze this conflict now, and move the de-politicised masses in Russia towards his more extreme views so that he can continue the push into the ex-Soviet states. You stop Putin by showing him force. This is well understood in Eastern Europe - where this is existential - but far less so in much of Europe and the US. “You probe with bayonets: if you find mush, you push. If you find steel, you withdraw” - Vladimir Lenin. And in the US there are many saying that this is not "our fight". It was a common mentality before and into the start of World War 2. The US can't deal with China without a Europe that is free of Russian tyranny, GLWTS.

You can walk out of that interview thinking they understand, but they really might not. I found it saves time and effort all round to really have an informal chat with them if they offer you the job in order to make sure that you really are all on the same page when it comes to the cost saving that is code quality.

Ukraine is a threat to the Putin regime because it has been becoming a successful democracy on Russia's doorstep. This couldn't be tolerated by Putin. If Russia wanted an end to this war all it needs to do is to withdraw from Ukraine. If Ukraine wants and end it has to fight for it. If you agree to talks with Russia at this stage, the fighting will stop whilst they learn their lessons and rebuild up troops and armaments and have another go at the end of the decade - and this time the Baltics and the Suwałki Gap will be on the table as well. If you think that appeasing Russia will reduce the nuclear threat you do not understand the regime there.

  561. I think that in general, the politics here in the UK is a whole step further left than it is in other Western countries. The left wing are actually less likely to support Ukraine here than the right wing. People like Corbyn are of the mind that talks are always better, and have that in their minds as a solution. You can tell them until you're blue in the face that Putin will rearm and go again, but they'll stick to their passive position. The right-wing is 99% supportive of Ukraine. Even ones I'd consider to be really very right-wing like Jacob Rees-Mogg are supportive. There is the occasional character who goes against this, but not usually vocally and they often aren't politicians - just political influencers. People such as Aaron Banks come to mind here. Perhaps if the nation were to start to suffer as a direct consequence of support, then certain politicians would break rank - perhaps Liz Truss would be pushing to stop the support - she seems fairly bought into the populism of Trump, so maybe she'd move in that direction. But even here I'm not sure. Here, Ukraine doesn't feel that far away. Russia has long been the boogie man - during the Cold War. The working class here will often tell you that they think that Europe did something that was partly to blame for the war - but that's primarily a function of the inculcated hate of the EU which was whipped up by Brexit. I don't know. If the thumb screws tighten then perhaps things change. But until then I really can't see it. However, all of that said. None of them actually have a plan or a vision for Ukraine or Russia. It's always "as long as it takes". IMO, if that doesn't change then things get less stable for our democracies - even here. Churchill figures are somewhat lacking currently. Even our next likely PM - Starmer - is woolly on this front.

  569. Putin knew that his grip on absolute power was beginning to wane, he became particularly paranoid during the COVID epidemic and was very isolated. He has seen Ukraine becoming a successful democracy as a threat for some time (particularly since Maidan). He can't have Slavic brothers and sisters having a democracy right on the border because that will massively undermine his regime's ability to hold on to power. He has been spectacularly corrupt since early on in his premiership, so if his regime collapses he knows like any Mafia boss that that's the end for him. For this reason and also for logistical reasons to do with hydrocarbon control over Europe and also mineral extraction and farm land in Ukraine being of huge economic value - he ordered the invasion. Only a small clique of people knew of the plan, and with the US so openly describing to the world the build up of Russian forces on the Ukraine border, the invasion was rushed and botched - and that's before the evidence of corruption in the supply chains came to light. Also, due to the incredibly inefficient information vertical in the Russian government and military they actually thought that it would be a cake-walk for them. I look forward to the hearings in The Hague.
