The ballast was construction pipes just laid in a rack, so such an orientation change would literally cause the sub to dump ballast and bob to the surface uncontrollably. There is no real "taking on water" in that design, the pressures are so extreme, even a pinhole would generate a jet capable of cutting a human in half and damaging the hull. I'm still of the belief it was the viewport that failed. The inrush of water would generate a tremendous water hammer within the pressure vessel, plus equipment and crew being thrown like projectiles inside the hull, generating stresses that'd cause the hull to entirely fail. The Hydraulic Press channel has an excellent scale model carbon fiber over titanium sub that he ran up to 80 - 85 bar pressures before failure. He didn't have a viewport on the kludge, but it did show some impressive strength until failure and worrisome traits as well (bubbles being squeezed from the carbon fiber)..

Well, that is the entire purpose of internship - to acquire real world experience. The difference between most internships and OceanGate's programs being, most internships have adult supervision, OceanGate didn't.

@mrcase77 interns were hired. Internship isn't for teens, but for college students well through their college program, to gain experience to acquire their degree. So, headlines like this are pure bullshit, it's like calling my own physician, a resident, a teen. OK, a "teen" by extending the term well into his 20's and is fully qualified to perform surgery. Inexperienced, yes, that's what internship is for, to gain experience in the practical side of all of that theory the college has been funneling into their heads.

@mrcase77 well, Rush shared one common flaw with the military. Neither is known to have adult supervision. But yeah, when his criteria for hiring one engineer is that he's a surfer, well, as I've said elsewhere, I'd have qualms just walking next to his piece of shit. At least, in the military, when we had the absolute lowest bidder make something, it did adhere to stringent specifications. There's a video here of a guy who has a pressure chamber and made a scale model of the sub, with flat, plain end cap assemblies and alas, using plain epoxy. But, the hull was a machined tube that was wrapped in carbon fiber and he ran it down to 80 - 85 bar pressures before it imploded. I suggest that the technology, properly implemented and stringently inspected after each dive, is actually worthy of further investigation - in ROV's. If it crushes, one loses only equipment and instrumentation. Assuming, of course, one uses actual submersible engineers and students are adequately supervised. I'm also willing to bet it won't look cool, it'll likely look like shit, but work like a dream. But then, I've always been a function over form type. Hence, entirely avoiding "Looks like a fish, moves like a dream, steers like a cow".

@michaelsacco1463 nice to know that I wasn't fighting in our wars back when I was in my 40's. Guess it was just a really loud tea social or something. In this case, it's a shitty and inaccurate reference to interns from college, who typically are actually in their 20's. It's as bad a reference as the phosphogypsum being used for roads, but being utterly evil because it's "radioactive". Radioactive always in scare quotes, as the phosphogypsum is around the same levels of radioisotopes as a granite countertop, which is also radioactive with the same isotopes. But, is totally OK sitting in one's kitchen and preparing one's food upon. Rush's biggest failure was his steadfast refusal to hire any engineers that had actual experience in submarines and submersibles or any other deep submergence technology field. His claim being "stifled innovation", but in reality, it lead to cutting entirely the wrong corners in ways that ultimately were fatal.
