Hybrid, one has partially ionized gases from a jet engine's combustion, ionize that and air, to drive an additional stage of fan driver or even simple turbothrust like an old fashioned afterburner. Now, it's only a factor of controlling ion flow and temperatures within the engine. Simplicity itself - until you try that control... :/
