It got hijacked by Nativists, a populist isolationist and Protestant first group that was every bit as weird and zany as the MAGAts.They tore the party apart to the point that the same conservatives finally abandoned ship and formed a new party, the Republican Party. The new party's first candidate for POTUS, some Abraham Lincoln guy. A case might be made for sedition and even for advocating for the overthrow of the US government, both serious felonies. That's why both houses of Congress terms begin on 3-Jan, while POTUS begins 20-Jan, to ensure no vacancy is present, leaving the nation without a functional branch of government.
