@da.reverend They had referendum in 2020 with account of only 23% of voting population supporting statehood. So, nothing happened. They are having referendums frequently almost every 3 to 4 years but the general population have no interest to be officially the 53rd state. American politicians have no interest to the population with less mutual benefit.

That was the contexts of the funny joke to bring awareness of the crisis which Puerto Rico needs help. It's sad that the joke is twisted to appear racism instead of bringing awareness of the literal garbage problem.

@J.G-v2t The independence movement is relatively low 5% while statehood 23% of the voting population. So the island has been floating status for 126 years. They have spending money for referendum for every 3 to 4 years without consensus. This could be the reason of the joke by the comedian.

The comedian's joke is funny when he was talking about the literal garbage landfill - an environmental crisis of Puerto Ricans for years until now. The joke should be draw awareness of the garbage problem in Puerto Rico instead of twisting the context of the joke to appear disliking the Puerto Ricans.
