  2. Hitler was no more a fool than his generals. After all, they were jointly in agreement that Soviet Union will fall after couple of weeks in summer of 1941. As did not happened, despite major blunders of Soviet high command, war gradually turned into bloody slugfest. Something that Germans could not win.

  3. Big picture was that Germans had initiative in South, but Soviets had sort of initiative in Center and in the North. In the Center, bloody battles were raging whole year around Rzhev (not just Operation Mars, even before that) . In the North, Germans sent 11th Army to try to capture Leningrad, but Soviets launched their own offensive first, leading to bloody stalemate. And even in the South, Army Group A had precedence as it targeted main objective (i.e. oilfields) .
