Rokossovsky knew it was pointless, and I suspect everyone of his subordinates. They probably faked some attacks to please Stalin, which looked diversionary to the Germans.

I doubt these were more than diversionary attacks, as Germans described them. Full blown offensive would have usual massed Soviet artillery fire.

Well, if they managed to do this in late October, early November, it would be too late to do anything about Astrakhan or Don bridgeheads. Winter was coming, 6th Army was exhausted with little fuel and ammo, and Soviet reinforcements were assembling on its flanks. Best possible scenario for the Germans was to pull back some of the units to the rear, thus escape inevitable Soviet pincers that would come in a few weeks.

@nicholasconder4703 Common thing in many armies, to feign half-hearted attack just to please superiors and claim you did something ;)

@Rachotilko True, Red Army considered such attack and such casualties diversionary.

I doubt these attacks were little more than a diversion, as Germans described them. Full blown offensive would have usual Soviet artillery barrage devastating German forward position. It may not succeed but casualties on the German side would definitely be in thousands (like Rzhev battles) .

@Raskolnikov70 I think they would pull all of their panzer forces i.e. 14th Panzer and 24th Panzer, try to reinforce them and resupply them and form mobile reserve . Since Hitler hated retreats, it would probably not happen.

It was not a full offensive. Everyone, from Rokossovsky to the last soldier knew tit would fail. So they did not put much effort.
