@TIK will hold off Soviets for few more months 😁

It was not obvious. War would drag for 2+ more bloody years, and the fighting was deep in Russia proper.

@macoooos9204 True. Planes were not returning empty.

Doubtful. Pitomnik was much better airfield. And there were several others (Karpovka, Basargino, Voroponovo ...) Germans actually had plenty of airfields in the beginning of the pocket, thus Gumrak was deemed as not needed.

Actually, they did not. Soviets had something like 1.5:1 advantage in manpower at the beginning of the operation, and 2:1 in tanks . Don't know about artillery. Granted, Germans were starved, but Soviets also did not have plenty of food. Plus, weather was atrocious for attacking (low temperatures, open fields, deep snow ) .

@darklysm8345 1.5:1 is certainly not enough if you do not have other force multipliers . Soviets did not have overwhelming airpower, or even artillery and armor. They did have starvation on their side, and ammo/fuel shortage to a certain extent. Thus, it ended relatively shortly, 2 months and a few days from the closing of the ring. With proper supply situation, Germans would be able to endure much longer in similar circumstances (Rzhev, Italian front, Courland, French ports etc ...)

@allanfifield8256 There is a film of captured Axis generals just as they were surrendering. Only Paulus looks emaciated.

@melgross 1. Germans were determined not to repeat "mistake" from 1918, and surrender while they still have an army. 2. German strategy in 1943 and early part of 1944 was to bleed Soviets dry, and stop Western Allies in France. 3. There were some peace feelers between Germany and USSR during spring of 1943 (mud season with less fighting) .
