Interesting thing to note: during WW2 Soviets considered an unit (battalion, regiment, brigade ...)as still existing if it had its HQ elements (i.e. staff, rear services, administration ...) . Actual combat soldiers were considered as "flowing", i.e. for example whole companies could be wiped out, and then replaced with new recruits, but battalion would not be considered as destroyed. Germans on their part brought this "tactic" to a whole new level. They would simply take replacement battalions of a division in the Germany, assign new officers, and call it a day. Division would continue fighting like nothing happened (at least while they still had men to do this).
