Narrow front (Schwerpunkt) was mostly a German invention. And they knew how to counter it. Coupled with the fact that they had "better" armored forces (i.e. heavier vehicles with better firepower) , this was not a good strategy. It would usually end up in formation of choke points, where Allies would suffer heavy casualties. Broad front was on the other hand successful both in the East and in the West. Germans were inferior in numbers and could not defend everywhere. In fact, they would have to withdraw even from well defended positions in order to avoid encirclement . Montgomery of course knew all of this, and himself employed broad front strategy in his early victories.
