@TheImperatorKnight Like it or not, Churchill wanted to preserve British empire (and dominance) , thus he advocated war against Germany. "Moral principles" are usual British BS when they do something in their own interest. He was man of the year of 1940 simply because he seemingly saved aforementioned empire, despite the crisis of 1940.

@browngreen933 Partially true, although centrifugal forces were already at work. Had Churchill concluded peace treaty with Germans, he would still have to defend against Japan and independence movement in India. I suppose British Empire would have lasted roughly ten years more than it lasted historically.
