It is interesting that Western audiences see this film as shocking, while on the East it is just another war tale, not much worse than countless others.

@livingtribunal4110 No, it is a different mindset (of Germans) . In the West they were fighting against essentially the men that belonged to the same culture and race. In the East, they were conquerors of inferiors. Japanese had the same mentality towards Chinese.

Dirlewanger was actually just a man, in fact more gifted man than many. That is what makes his story important for all of us.

Actually, too much protection tends to turn into its opposite : total chaos.

He had a typical SS mentality in the East. They considered themselves as ancient warlords that had loyalty only to their comrades, but could do anything they desired with conquered lands and people.

These were not hunters, these were simply poachers. As for Simo, look at his face :D

@jonhart7630 Ukrainians (actually Galicians) served in various SS scratch formations. They made sizable part of Dirlewanger brigade during Warsaw uprising.

Actually, they did not complain about atrocities. They complained because it was chaotic and medieval. Dead bodies lying on the streets, burning and pillaging, instead of neat rows of burial holes and "stock" packaged into them ;)

@harrycallahan5018 It is debatable as there is no independent confirmation.

@harrycallahan5018 You cope :P

@thelordofcringe Well, not exactly. US and Britain choose deliberately not to implement Geneva convention in Pacific theatre. Japanese were not better, but one crime does not justify other.

@harrycallahan5018 No proof of anything, except his face been disfigured by Soviet bullet. Finland lost the war, and they desperately needed heroes. Later, USSR became an enemy of the West, so anyone killing Soviets was taken as granted.

Dirlewanger was actually probably mentally ill, with PTSD and sociopathic traits. He was obviously very intelligent man, but with deep and repressed sadistic and sexually deviant desires. His WW1 experiences shattered any societal norms he had, and chaos & battle became his element. Probably saw himself as ancient warlord bound only by loyalty to his comrades, but having total control over spoils of war (including humans). In fact, this was common among SS in the East - they were the conquerors from superior race, and as such had right to fulfill any of their dark desires.
