Not really. Germany lost more territory in WW1 than in WW2 if you include colonies. Economically speaking, WW1 was more devastating .

Problem was that Germany already economically devastated by the war (same as other participants), then they lost territories and colonies, then there were reparations, and then they shoot themselves in the foot by hyperinflation which actually devastated domestic small creditors (debts not in gold marks) . After that, path for NS was open.

Reparations were coup de grace that broke the camel's back . Hyperinflation (i.e. money printing) was an attempt to wipe out debts - mostly to domestic creditors as reparations were in gold marks. It lead to impoverishment and subsequent rise of National Socialists alongside communists - when usual world order crumbles, extreme left and right fill the vacuum.

It was one of many causes. First the war itself, then loss of territories and colonies, then reparations, and finally hyperinflation which wiped the savings of many middle and working class Germans. This naturally led to rise of NS.

@LlibertarianGalt Usual TIK BS :D Hyperinflation was caused by money printing, and reason for money printing was to pay all the obligation state had (mostly towards its own citizens) . At that point in time German state was simply not solvent, and could either print money or declare bankruptcy.

@LlibertarianGalt Quoting economists has nothing to do with it, you could find economists having opposite opinions on every economic subject . What is important is historical truth - war, loss of territories, reparations, money printing.

@LlibertarianGalt Nope. Hitler got in power only in 1933, so his socialism has nothing to do with hyperinflation. Facts on the ground were simple : Germany lost the war, territories, had to pay reparations, created self-inflicted hyperinflation and all of that joined made economic ruin. Later, Germany was under the mercy of foreign creditors that withdrew their money when Great Depression started which only made things worse.

@LlibertarianGalt Nope. Read the history of Weimar republic. It was socialist only shortly towards beginning, then it reverted to liberal capitalism which actually led it to ruin.

What you fail to understand is that Germany had devastated economy (war, blockade, loss of territories, loss of working age men, reparations ) and plenty of obligations denominated in marks (debts, pensions, securities ...) They could either default or print money. TIK paints a picture of healthy economy, which is of course ludicrous.

@LlibertarianGalt Again, you fail to grasp things. First, Germans did pay part of reparations in gold, coal etc ... When they failed to meet other demands, Ruhr was occupied by French. Second, economy was already in ruins because of war, blockade and loss of territories. Third, Germany was already in debt crisis because they borrowed to finance war. This is a compound of bad economic factors, and saying that reparations did not cause hyperinflation is ridiculous. Saying that reparation WERE NOT SOLE CAUSE for economic collapse would be true, but they were certainly one of causes.

@LlibertarianGalt War was largest cause for economic devastation, no one denies that. But war was not caused by socialists, quite the contrary it was caused by imperialistic capitalists that fought over resources and markets using mostly poor worker (peasant) class. Socialism, no matter how flawed, was a response to war, not its cause. In fact, it was the crisis of capitalism that created this ruin. Borrowing was not made by socialist government, it was actually done by capitalist governments during the war, and it could not be repaid by impoverished German economy, especially considering that they had reparations to pay. Overall, TIKs narrow minded view - something is bad so it must be socialist :D , is completely false. Reality on the ground is simple : both socialism and capitalism have their flaws, and both could cause immense suffering .

@Saeronor They were not "empty space", otherwise Entente would not take them after the WW1. They were source of resources. Also, large parts of Silesia were lost to Poland even after WW1. Like it or not, coupled with human losses , WW1 was economically bigger drain for German economy. Also, after WW2 Germans were included in Marshall Plan (West Germany) while after WW1 they were subjects to reparations and occupation of Ruhr.
