@TIKhistory I have no doubt that Stalin (and Zhukov) would sacrifice thousands if that benefited their personal aims. However, what is questionable is this : did they actually had enough man to do it. USSR has already lost both millions of troops in 1941 and 1942, and most populous territories. In 1942 they had like 2:1 advantage in manpower, but they also had Rzhev and Kotluban where tehy were losing more than 10:1 (in terms of casualties). Or in other words, if that kept up Germany would win. It is quite possible that numbers are cooked: i.e. German loses deliberately minimized and Soviet maximized.
