  1. To my knowledge, I’ve not had a wolf near a camp. In the Sierras, a momma cougar scream and wake up my buddy, who then woke me. Later that year I found the tracks of her and two little ones. In Pennsylvania, a deer was a couple feet from my hammock. It “WHOOFED and ran. In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a moose ambled ploppingly up near my tent. Then WHOOSHED as it scooted. On Canada’s Lake Mijinemungshing,, something was approaching, busting brush like a truck. About 20-30 yards away, it caught our scent and turned away. On the Brazos River in Texas, cattle wandered through camp. They’re not a bright animal. On the Au Sable River in Michigan, two big flocks of turkeys wandered past our supper table. A gaggle of coyotes were less than a hundred yards out of camp in Michigan. And in Okinawa several Marines wandered past camp. We fed them corn meal mush for breakfast the next morning.
