  1. Ben was written as a white guy, but most of the people turning up for auditions were just random locals who wanted to be in a movie. Well, the background characters didn't need to have any acting talent or experience, but the lead definitely did. The only professional actor to apply for the job was Duane Jones, so they hired him. The script wasn't changed. Nothing in the script said anything about his race, but it wasn't a typical black character script of the time. If Mr. Jones ad libbed anything, that was him, not the script. I have a dvd that has a bonus feature of Romero talking about it. It was good. It goes to show that there's really no legitimate reason for a script to be written differently for a white or black character.
