  1. Sanctions work if they are against a smaller opponent - key is to recognize who is the smaller party. If they are against an equal or greater, opponent then they in effect sanction the sanctioner.

  2. Speaking of sanctions – when the embargo on Cuban cane sugar was implemente\d the USA switched to high fructose corn syrup. It’s in everything now - not a good sweetener, metabolized differently from straight sucrose, cheap though. HFC is now in major use and vested interests want to keep it that way. Looking at the trend in death stats in the States due to diabetes, heart attacks, and other obesity related diseases related to overuse of HFCs - hey! Maybe Castro won!
