  1. If a country can't pay in a money the seller can use - it's sort of like not paying. And of course the West confiscated 200 billion or so of Russia's foreign reserves - so, Russia does not want to build up "confiscatable" reserves. Doesn't want to give the gas for free. Sort of understandable why it requires rubles now.
