  4. I found it odd that transport planes like the C-47 and Ju-52 would use uderwing design. Also overwing kept the motors up high out of the dirt and dust ups and safety for ground crews getting hit from a propeller.

  9. later 109s had the "Galland Canopy ". Google image it , it was much better. Adolf Galland designed it himself.

  10. It was made in the Mid 30s and was to be a transport plane ,so complicated retractable landing gear did not matter and adds weight. As for drag ,it was designed with a wide high drag wing for short take off and landings and higher load lift. Drag was built into it by no choice.

  24. The 109s landing gear was like that on purpose ,to speed up production in factories. Planes without wings yet installed could be wheeled around the factory floor.

  28. Speed was not a big deal on cargo planes ,like today. It did have a few advantages. Wide wing for shorter take off and landing. A over the top wing made loading and unloading roomier than a beneath wing like the C-47 and Ju-52. Even modern Transports are all over the top wings today. like the C-124 Globemaster II. ... C-130 Hercules. ... C-141 Starlifter. ... C-5 Galaxy. ...

  32. True. The US alone produced 3Xs the amount the planes as Germany. Willow Run could make a B-24 four engine bomber quicker than Germany could build a small fighter. Now add Britain and Russia into the mix.

  34. The lost many 109s on take off and landing especially on makeshift airfields . There was a 1970s TV interview with Galland where he wanted all 109 production to stop and produce the Fw-190 only.
