  1. She definitely went off on an odd trail here. Slavery & the southern economy were intertwined for the sole purpose of creating & maintaining financial wealth for white-owned farms & emerging small industry. So, she can't really separate the two subjects in a smooth tactful way. That's like trying to justify physical abuse. Truth is, there were influential wealthy southern families & trade businesses that would financially collapse if they didn't fight to keep the primary "source" of their wealth in place. Sadly, even after their plantations, farms & businesses were lost anyway, burned to the ground, many southerners bizarrely continued to believe slavery was a moral right & still worth fighting for. (Which likely led to the barely-legal share cropping schemes that followed emancipation. And not much better than slavery abuse. Share cropping kept blacks living in sub-human poverty & perpetually in debt to white landlords. And because share cropping kept the southern economy limping along after the war, vs. collapsing, most legislators ignored the abusive one-sided business practice for decades. Until the King-Kennedy era - King leading the charge to stop what little remained of sub-par lease-farming, while Kennedy balked & begrudgingly followed.)
