  1. NC was heavily populated by Scots shipped here & enslaved by the English after the Scottish Jacobean uprising & war with England. But if you ever mention this to a Lefty they mock it as, "Not being the same as African slavery." In fact, the brutality against white slaves was probably worse in some ways because white slave owners & overseers laying their hands on white slaves, in violence & various assaults, was likely more "personally & socially acceptable" than abusively touching & assaulting black slaves. (Point being, there were different degrees of abuse, all bad any way you look at it.)

Most of the southern Civil War bitterness that still remains is not about losing slaves & slave labor but about the burning, theft & destruction of family-owned homes, estates, plantations & businesses. And other property. It's a generational handed-down anger that's become part of southerner's cultural legacy here. After the war, many slaves voluntarily returned to their former owners & their neighbors, by choice, to work as paid workers or sharecroppers. It was still a miserable poverty existence though. The "choice decision" is deliberately overlooked in the current SJW history story for obvious reasons. Esp knowing the post-war industrial boom provided plenty of work for poor people almost everywhere. (But in all fairness, ex-slaves were at the bottom of the list for hiring as European migrants poured into the US for work. It's one of the reasons why many returned to farmwork.)
