15 years ago Atlanta's violent crime stats were, happily, dropping. Until researchers discovered that the city government & police had recategorized hundreds of recorded violent felony rapes & various physical assaults as minor misdemeanors. After these were counted back in, Atlanta's crime stats rose near or above the national average. They lied because they didn't want to frighten potential new residents considering moving to the growing Atlanta metro area.
