  1. Why? Ruth Ellis. Whether or not you agree with the verdict, her case was weaponised by the chattering classes. A Labour MP brought in a private member’s bill to end the death penalty for murder, and parliament dutifully voted for it, the law taking effect in 1969 (1973 in Ireland?). The Human Rights Act of 1998 outright banned the death penalty for any and all crimes, and the ECHR precludes it being re-established in member countries.
