Seriously: Formosus preferred Arnulf of Carinthia over Lambert of Spoleto for Holy Roman Emperor, and only crowned the latter after some coercion. Now, Stephen had been made Bishop of Anagni by Formosus, much to his annoyance as he wanted something much grander; once he got it, Lambert came calling, and the result was the Cadaver Synod. Maybe Stephen VI was the instigator, but Lambert could’ve driven the scandal. Whatever. Two nutters were worse than one.
