  1. One of my friends is an Arabic interpreter. She’s paid basic public travel costs, reimbursement for hotel stays where applicable, and a few quid per hour above minimum wage. That suggests a lot more cases requiring interpretation than you might imagine. PS: you know how they say that the US and the UK are two states divided by one language? Now, imagine trying to interpret between languages with completely different etymological histories and cultural values. That’s specialist work. I wouldn’t recommend asking a dodgy customer to bring in their own interpreter!!!

  2. Sounds fine, but it’s not where legal matters are involved. Some words, concepts, and cultural references don’t have non-English equivalents; that’s where specialist interpreters come in.

  4. No, they don’t. They work for one of two - if I remember correctly - approved organisations which vet their credentials and skills thoroughiy. One of my friends is a legal interpreter.
