  1. We acquired Major Tom this way. First, we bought him an outside shelter, but he started venturing inside until, one day, he turned up limping and in obvious pain. The vet advised he was very old and had arthritis. Tom took his meds, ate, slept a lot inside, but always wanted to roam during the day. The old boy passed away quietly, being cuddled, at his last visit to the vets (he was not euthanised) aged, it was thought, around 23.
