  14. I’d dispute ‘depressed’. Eowyn was filled with despair and Aragorn represented the hope she’d lost (you know, because he’s called Estel?), so fixated her love on him. When she thought that hope lost, she went to die in the only way she saw as honourable, on the battlefield. Eowyn is a classic Anglo-Saxon heroine.

  16. My first RoP trailer was the Superfans. I thought I’d see other members of the Fellowship, scholars possibly, but instead I was treated to a whole bag of steaming wtf? I watched it all the way through, too horrified to look away in case the real world had imploded around me. That cured me of all hope I had for the series and, so, I’ve watched reviews like Drinker’s, but I wouldn’t touch RoP with a bargepole.

I rather suspect Tolkien saw her as a fit young lady taking part in games rather than warfare (and yes, I know that games arose as practice for warfare), so she was 'Amazonian' in the manner of many female athletes rather than encased in steel and waving a sword.

  18.  @matthewronsson  actually, Lord Dunsany’s ‘The King of Elfland’s Daughter’ that is still considered the finest fantasy novel of all time. I’m an English Lit & Lang graduate with interest in the Old and Middle English periods so, for me, Tolkien is far, far more than merely a fantasy writer and LoTRs is more than a fantasy. I loathe RoP because - well - it’s shallower than a half-dried up puddle.

The LoTR's text states that female Dwarves were few and looked so like the males that it was difficult to tell them apart. Aragon jokes that: it's the beards - and he isn't contradicted! I'm okay with the concept of beardless Dwarf females, actually, but the actress in the trailer is patently a lady and dressed like a World of Warcraft female Dwarf (and WoW female Dwarfs do not have beards).

I even liked the new Lost Boys and how real death taught them about the reality behind their eternal fantasy, flagging one of the more subtle themes of the original story which was keenly felt come WWI.

But emotional and psychological abuse can be so subtle that the victim might not realise their position and, if they eventually suss it, may not be believed because they don’t have bruises. That’s one reason why the term ‘domestic violence’ was replaced with ‘intimate partner abuse’. I suggest reading ‘Why Does He Do That?’ by Lundy Bancroft.

My greatest fear is that someone will literally burn the books and ban all storytelling but their approved line - y'know, 1984? That's why I care about original stories and their more modern descendents, including Star Wars. It does appear that the studios cannot even make sequels these days; they just get hold of a formulaic script, buy a title to slap over the top and happily bastardise away. But could we be sure, in the current climate, that there wouldn't be even more damaged if in the public domain?

  92. I can see it now: The Drinker is Arishem, Leader of the Forth Host, and he’s just turned his thumb down... Apocalypse now! I loved Jack ‘King’ Kirby’s creations and, like a true Marvelite, have all the series. The Celestials made the Eternals and Deviants from basic early Mankind, becoming gods and demons. The original story was interesting and uncompromising. These gods weren’t candidates for halos and the demons were so damn tragic. This movie rejects, reverses and rewrites everything. And the whole premise that the human line can throw up mutants (like the X-Men) tied in so well once. PS: Sprite was a boy. The woman stuck in a girl’s body is so Anne Rice and a justification for certain types of men....

Ralph Bakshi did his best with the media then available and I rather like the film; the BBC dramatised the story and did a damn good job (I finally learned the poems once they were set to music); Peter Jackson made a trilogy which, despite the wobblies, is an outstanding achievement. Tinker Bell represents the world of the child (children can be duplicitous and downright cruel, you know) and the tension between her and Wendy is, therefore, more critical (lols) than you, oh erudite Drinker, state here. Btw, when Peter returns to find Wendy a year after the main storyline, he has no idea who Tinker Bell is and it’s implied that she’s dead. Yes, it could be that playing that game is over, but it might well signify that he’s started on his journey to manhood and one of his boyhood memories has gone.

  110. I recently watched the Addams Family 2; pure fun, Easter eggs and inconsequential things suddenly informing big plot matters with terrible jokes on top. My sons (21 and 24) and I laughed a riot in a cinema otherwise silent as the rest of the audience went 'huh?'. We plan on seeing Encanto next, because it looks so bright and interesting. Animation is where the good writers went...

Don’t knock Carol Danvers - Captain Marvel - because she had a complete backstory, hung out with Wolverine, lost her powers and her memory to Rogue, ended up Binary., made a comeback., had a baby with an extra dimensional hero/villain and... that last one was a bit odd, true. Phyla-Vell was a lot, lot better, too. Kamala was and is an affront to the name Mar-Vell.

  138.  @martianproductions997  altering fairy tales is yet another attempt to replace the archetypes with ‘modern representations’ or, to put it bluntly, eradicate what we understand by the human condition. Amazon and Disney have deployed characters who state: the past is dead. No, the past lives in us - our world is the product of the past, be that good or bad - and losing that past leaves us vulnerable to those who want to control our future.
