  2. Ah, the standardised test... Some years ago, one of my sons was stuck on an online biology test; two of the questions were nonsensical and others grammatically incorrect. I tried to help and noticed that, of the ten questions, two returned patently wrong answers. My son explained that he was frustrated by having to give a wrong or approved answer to get the required pass mark - and not just in biology. This is how institutionalised learning spreads falsehood and misinformation. I doubt very few parents spotted the problems I did, because they’d been schooled the same way. For the record, I’m now 60 and received a Grammar School education, earned by passing the old-style 11 Plus. When they took that system away, they didn’t do it because we were elitist snobs, but because that system taught its pupils to think for themselves.

  3. I ditched FaceBook when I realised I was forcing myself to look at it, because I was living a 'real life'. That and the algorthims decided my indentity as a middle-aged woman which did not match me at all.

  6. Addicts lie... parental fault may be a lie, just as the self-medication explanation may be a lie. Addiction is a difficult subject and the ways into it are multitude, possibly meaning we will never find a unifying theory enabling development of a cure especially when sufferers do not want to be cured.

  9. Yes, totally damn right. I gave up tv and newspapers about 20 years ago, but recently sat by a hospital bed where the ward tv was on for hours every evening. OMG what a load of brain-numbing, hysterical, puerile tat! Even the news was OTT with pointless and extended explanations of events, all Politically Correct (i.e. Woke).

  10. In the West, one of the most powerful fears of all, shame, is more prevalent today, I think, than physical fear. A tiny minority are using shame to control the majority; we must capitulate to insane, random and often contradictory ideas or be ‘cancelled’. Jobs, homes, families and freedom - lives - can be arbitrarily taken away by an anonymous individual acting from a position of spite, envy, cruelty or hate via the medium of social media whom others rush to support so they won’t be targeted or because they share the same pettiness. The jackboot to the face is now the jackboot to the spirit. No one is safe. One final thought: Socialist states frequently shame political dissidents by forcing them to confess to, and apologise for, their wrong-think. It’s a powerful tool, both angering and suppressing the populace. But this would never happen in the free West, right?

Transformers: Lost Light - the totalitarian Functionist rulers had cameras implanted in every mecha’s optics and shamed non-conformists by empurata (an anagram of amputate), removing hands and faces and, ultimately, minds. This expanded to a programme of eradicating all other species in their particular universe, because they were not Cybertronian; once they’d achieved that, they aimed to do the same through all universes. The rulers also manipulated their society with lies presented as truth because, while it might be easy to monitor everyone physically, they could not mentally. Fiction/fantasy holds the up mirror of reality.

  13. The biggest promoter of scapegoating is social media. Those with more extreme socio-political agendas have inserted a crowbar into the minds of the masses. Thus we have the current insanity around gender, which now commands a lot of airtime but is, in fact, best summed up by Shakespeare: It is a tale/Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury/Signifying nothing. As I write, it’s clear that women in the US are being scapegoated, and that their political persecution has begun. Behind those ‘gender politics’ lies something extraordinarily wicked. Imagine a future where ‘women’ do not exist; the concept and the word has been made redundant. How long before the concept and word ‘men’ does not exist? What shall we be called, subjugated, voiceless and broken, but slaves....

  14. You mistake the core meaning here: you might wish to consider the current insanity where the authoritarian movement is ‘transgenderism’ and women are being ‘cancelled’. I congratulate you on not contracting Covid-19, but many millions did, and all at once. The lockdowns were meant to slow the number of hospital admissions and to permit the recovery/disposal of the dead, and the vaccinations were meant to keep as many as possible out of hospitals and the morgue. No politics here, just a statement of fact.
