I hold an English Literature and Language degree, so I’m happy to state: he’s being disingenuous. And is he criticising Tolkien for translating original texts into idiomatic English? I never knew ‘Beowulf’ was fanfic, fancy that.

My husband is one of them. He's advised me that, if I love Tolkien so much, I should not pre-judge this new iteration, but watch it and love it., since it's been made for me. He has never read anything Tolkien, not even Tha Hobbit, because 'fantasy is rubbish'. He is still alive, btw.

LoTR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, the Unfinished Tales… they make up the ultimate canon. It’s a single, self-contained, fully-realised entity. In this, it’s pretty unique and has influenced fantasy even more than classics such as The King of Elfland’s Daughter or The Sword in the Stone/The Once and Future King. It’s the last bastion against the petty-minded envy of those suffering histrionic personality disorder (I’m being polite) who are trying to pwn everything and push The Message. Sauron wanted to bring the whole world into Mordor, an ugly place without hopes or dreams. I’m sure he would be proud of these self-proclaimed captains.

What was it Ben Bova wrote? Villains consider themselves heroes in their own stories? These modern writers never got to read the whole exposition, what with their three second attention span.
56
Honestly, I think Chris Hemsworth had enormous fun baiting Waititi to go batshit crazy, because his Thor is going to be bumped from the MCU. PS: Waititi is 46 and seems obsessed with fantasy women. Hm.
54
The curse + amnesia invalidates the need for a story. It’s pretty much: “Mermaid dies after three days. The end.”
44
@EmmiLiaHoward I don't think they've stolen my culture - they have mangled, abused and disrespected it. Ditto one of this world's greatest works of literature.
40
Barely an inconvenience, I'd say.
38
Fire resistance potion, +9000 fire retardant on the armour stats and a critical D20 roll.
32
Since I found out that, during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, mobs really did murder and canabalise the targets of their jealousy, I can't quite cope with 'eat the rich'.
30
That’s actually insulting A.I.
26
Maybe she didn’t get the best caviar and Bolly?
23
My expectations have been subverted. Sighs

It’s called Stockholm Syndrome and it generally kicks in as a survival strategy after weeks, if not months, of gruelling emotional and psychological torture by nasty bastards. I’m impressed that Robyn and her not-merry men can cause it to happen in such short order.
21
@ianpatterson6552 given that sounds like the title of a theme park water ride, lots of money, I'd think.

Alyssa Wapanatakh has watched all the Peter Pan movies. Good for her! Obviously doesn’t mention that she’s familiar with at least ‘Peter and Wendy’ by a Scottish author named Sir James Matthew Barrie. Probably no one working on this abomination has ever read the book much less come to grips with its complex themes. EDIT: let me share this, one of my favourite quotes, which now has an added air of sadness,: “So come with me, where dreams are born, and time is never planned. Just think of happy things, and your heart will fly on wings, forever, in Never Never Land."

I’m assuming these actors and actresses are standing on the edge of the Amazon abyss and, there, they see their own souls reflected.

Cancelling good shows after season one or two seems to be a deliberate move. It forces viewers to spend time searching for other good shows, thus creating watch hours for the stats provided to investors while temporarily covering up the number of unsubscribers.

Remember the story of the man who robbed a bank and was astonished to be arrested shortly afterwards? He reportedly said “but I wore the juice!” Turns out, he believed that lemon juice, usable as invisible ink, made his face invisible to the security cameras. The show writers also suffer from the lemon juice delusion.
17
Was discussing this new movie with my son and he tartly observed that the term 'the modern audience' is a euphemism for zombies.
17
I know Disney said that Marvel was their way of reaching a male audience but I rather think it was more about reaching the nerds - and nerdesses - who represented a pool of otherwise untouchable cash. Disney was not alone in doing this, as every studio put out nerd-focussed content. But they all underestimated us, thinking we were so stupid they could eventually serve hot garbage and we’d pay for the privilege of gobbling it up. Sheer effing hubris, my dear.
17
Thought it might be a spark generated by the spinning.
16
Some of the best villains are heroes in their own way. Davros realised the eventual genetic monsters the Kaleds would become and made them travel machines in order to out-survive the Thals. In the end, he saved his people.
15
Er… Cleopatra’s life story ‘resonates with every woman’. Personally, I’ve never murdered family members, fought back from exile, avoided assassination attempts, seduced a Caesar or married a Roman general for political reasons. I’ve never felt the urge to commit suicide to avoid the humiliation of being paraded on the streets in chains by a guy named Octavian who also killed Caesar’s son for political reasons. Lady was awesome, very intelligent and spoke several languages, but no: her life story does not resonate with me.
14
Conan escaped the clutches of evil demons once more. Phew!
14
The original story has a Christian message so it’s obviously easy to replace that with The Message.
14
Tower falling - metal and bricks and fire crashing down - and one blackguard Elf stands there calculating the trajectory of every piece? The writers' grasp of physics is about the same as their grasp of time, plot, conversation, military strategy and bladed weapon skills.
14
@billy-the-butcher alibi needed...
14
Yep, hypocrites. I guess there’s no niche for them in religion these days.
14
Let me get this straight… The elves are going to die unless they wear mithril garments/armour. This means that it’s the elves fault that the dwarfs must mine mithril for them, as a consequence of which the dwarfs encounter Durin’s Bane. Er… right…
13
I’m still behind the theory that a writer or writing team come up with a generic idea for a show and produce a generic script written in red crayon to pass to a studio. Said studio squints at the idea and someone says: hey, this is a bit like (fill in the IP)! The studio buys the IP title and has the script updated with the appropriate place and character names. Then, down the line, both writers and studio start repeating this ‘canon is so restrictive’ because the show was never intended to be part of that or, indeed, any IP. And then the disingenuous bar studs get to call the genuine fandom ‘toxic istaphobes’. Rinse and repeat.
13
I'd dispute that; there's an absolute ton of beautiful. terrifying and philosophical fantasy works out there, in many languages and spanning well over 1,000 years. The lazy tendency is to just reach for and blame Tolkien when newer writers lack imagination and storytelling skills.
12
The Little Mermaid, born of the sea foam, wanted a soul so that she could reach heaven when her 300 years were up. This live-action remake is spot on in that respect: it’s soulless.
12
"O Lorien! Too long have I dwelt upon this Hither Shore/And in a fading crown have twined the golden elanor..." Yup, Sam's daughter was the first to be named Elanor. I suggest ragwort, thistle and goosegrass might be good names for these impossible Hobb... Harfoots, in keeping with their hairstyles.
12
Yes, the concept of the alchemical marriage; the physical male with the spiritual female. I guess the people of Amazon don’t understand much - if anything - of the anthropological, philosophical or religious arguments underlying the basic storyline. And they call us trolls.
12
Don’t be logical! If RoP characters can face down a pyroclastic flow, ain’t no arrow going to hurt the ones here.
12
Hey, there are female nerds out here!
11
Kudos to Whoopi Goldberg for her perfect use of word-salad and various facets of gaslighting, including misdirection and shaming. Amazon couldn't even manage that...
11
I'm hoping that normies, younger ones especially, will watch this show and then go read the books. Many may fall by the wayside, but some will join our Fellowship and reject Amazon and all their Wokes.
11
@petriew2018 oh, he just tells me that I know he won't love it and stop bullying him. Only works one way. (I won't be inviting him to the upcoming CGI Transformers movie, anyway, because I want to nerd out in comfort.)
11
At this point, I really believe GaLADriel is Sauron in disguise.
10
@Iffy350 the writers probably think that The Flood is caused by heavy rain...
10
My husband tells me that I should not complain because RoP looks interesting and, being an adaptation of something that Tolkien wrote, I am sure to love it if I'd just watch the series and give the writers a chance. He says that I might see the books in a whole new light. For the record - just to be clear - my husband is still alive.
10
@luciusknight9946 I’ve proposed that! As proof, I present the tree struck with corruption, leaving men to die, making demands and expecting obedience, and playing silly buggers with those poor Numenorean recruits.
10
They're recasting Adar? Because the actor made him a memorable and even sympathetic character? Or because he decided to walk away from the abomination of season two? PS: I'd be happy to step up the action and ditch the feelings, but I'm not stepping into any wholly female writing room.
10
Two men took credit for my work in order to get promotion, but I lost track of the number of women who did the same 🤷♀️
10
If she's wed to Durin VI, there may be some hope.
10
Writers can’t decide if Galadriel is a warrior or a rogue…

@HerculesBallsInc I worked with a diversity hire who, within a few months of starting, refused to do any work, boasting that she’d sue management for discrimination if they sacked her. Said management investigated her credentials and found that she had a history of short periods of employment and large compensation wins. They sacked her, of course, sending (so I understand) documentary proof of the investigation with her notice. Maybe that company should take a closer look at the man’s history, too…
9
Maybe that was deliberate? Trying to keep the eejits’ hands off some of Marvel comics prime story arcs? Unfortunately, Secret Invasion wasn’t kept secret enough.
